Arrest Made in 2016 Kingman Homicide After Decade-Long Probe

Mohave County Sheriff’s Office detectives arrested a 46-year-old Kingman man on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2026, on a first-degree murder charge tied to a Dec. 14, 2016, homicide in Kingman.

The sheriff’s office identified the suspect as John P., 46, of Kingman. He was booked into the Mohave County Adult Detention Facility in Kingman without incident, according to MCSO.

The charge is connected to the shooting death of Matthew J., 22, of Kingman.

On Dec. 14, 2016, deputies responded to a weapons-offense call and found a gunshot victim in a wash between John L and Devlin Avenues in North Kingman, according to MCSO spokeswoman Anita M. as reported by The Standard. Aid was given at the scene. The victim was taken to a local hospital and later pronounced dead.

An autopsy determined the cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds, according to MCSO statements carried by local and regional outlets.

Detectives collected evidence and interviewed witnesses at the time. MCSO said there was not enough evidence then to support an arrest, and the investigation remained open.

Over time, crime-scene evidence was resubmitted and subjects were re-interviewed by detectives and the Special Investigations Unit, MCSO said. Through that work, John P. was identified as the suspect and a felony arrest warrant was issued.

Detectives contacted John P. and arrested him on Sept. 22. The investigation remains ongoing, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Standard, News 3 Las Vegas, 8 News Now, 3TV/CBS 5, and FOX5 Vegas all reported the same core account from MCSO on the arrest and the 2016 shooting.
